Scalability has professional services concepts flocking to franchising as a growth vehicle. Hand & Stone Spa, Heyday, Glosslab, Vitamin Shoppe, Drybar, Madison Reed, and European Wax Centers are among the beauty and wellness companies expanding with franchising as a growth vehicle. Beyond the traditional beauty services like waxing or haircutting, franchises are reaching into new areas of consumer demand, including yoga concept HOTWORX; Restore Hyper Wellness, which specializes in cryotherapy, IV drip, and infrared saunas; as well as Gameday Men’s Health for men suffering from low testosterone and other issues.Where there’s growth, investors follow. The franchise model is also getting attention from the investment world. Boston-based private equity firm Exaltare Capital Management acquired UKW Holding company, which operates Uni K Wax, last year with a goal of revving up expansion. In 2021, Restore received a shot in the arm from a $140 million investment led by global equity firm General Atlantic to accelerate its growth. Late last year, Pure Glow announced it raised $1.4 million in seed funding to help move into franchising its organic airbrush tanning concept. Sean Bock, who helped build Dry Bar and Heyday, is an investor and the brand's Chief Development Officer. There are currently two Boston locations, with plans for at least four more opening in its Seaport District in 2024—one as a company-owned location. In addition, the first franchise location is opening in Phoenix, with more planned to come throughout the year.
